Sculptural Mosaic Tile Murals.

Penny, hand sculpts each original piece meticulously. Each shape, each carved texture is an original design.
The shapes and sizes all vary, every project is site, shape and area specification.
Each sculptural tile mosaic is  made up of thousands of individual pieces in many shapes and forms that are
puzzled together to create a mural that tells a story or creates a scene by telling a story.

Handmade

Penny’s handmade tile really is made by hand! The tile pieces are neither perfectly smooth nor uniform and they are not supposed to be. That is the secret and the beauty of handmade tile. The quality of ‘perfect imperfection’ cannot be imparted by machine made equivalents. Penny’s handmade architectural tile is hand sculpted into original artwork.

The hand sculpting process is of a nature that no pieces are ever alike.

Penny makes each piece that has a presence that harmonizes with a wide range of natural findings,

in a way that visually and literally plays on the imagination.

It is a laborious process and each piece is often handled more than twenty times on its journey to installation.

Penny can sculpt tiles in cement that are specifically designed to withstand the elements.

Custom Design

Once a design has been approved, Penny gets to work on your designs.

She creates each tile by hand from start to finish, beginning with solid clay carved and scultped down to her specific theme of mosaic shapes.
The unique thing about Penny’s floor tiles, each one is handmade and when made, each tile has the added texture that she carves into each piece of tile. The finished pieces with all the texture is the best way to highlight the Glaze’s

Firing in Kiln
Once all the pieces have been sculpted, they must dry. This usually takes 4-5 days depending on thickness. This stage is called the green ware clay. All the pieces of the tile mural are fired first at around 2000 degrees in one of our two kilns. Firing generally takes two or more days. Most of that time being cooling down. This cannot be rushed.

Glazing
Once the first firing is complete I glaze the bisque ware with 2-3 coats of coloured glazes. Then the next firing is also 2000 degrees with at least 12 hours to complete and 12 hours to cool.

Layout and Installation

Once all the pieces have gone through all these steps I layout each piece onto the template that I had created. This assures me that no piece was missing mismarked or happened to break in the process.
I then pack each section to be shipped with a detailed puzzle map. In most instances I like to install and grout the project. The grouting as you can image is tedious and very detailed and I have made a special tool to help me get itto the tiny area. This gives me the satisfaction of completion, but in reality I think I just like the control of doing it my way!
